WHEN it comes to writing I have my own ways of recording my thoughts and stories, characters, plot ideas and all the rest of my minds jibber jabber. I use my sacred BlackBerry (now on the endangered list) for writing jokes, story ideas, and all sorts of random musings that stick in my mind. It’s not quite a pen and a pad, but it’s faster and easier to carry.
Having said that I also have a Red & Black notebook (native to the UK) which I use for all hand written notes on an array of topics which I mainly use at bed time. Now and again I’ll use the laptop but not that often.
So fellow writers, what’s your method?

I always have a notebook and a pen. or use the back of whichever paper available and within reach. Voice recorder while driving.Back of hand when nothing else is available.

I have notepads all over the place, the key is remembering which notes are where, grin.

Usually I use a moleskin notebook. It’s simple and straight to the point. Also means no waiting until it boots up.

The moleskin, seems to be a popular choice, and if i didnt use red n blacks i’d be doing the same.

To be honest I think Waterstones were selling them off one day. The tag mentioned Vincent van Gogh having one which is probably complete rubbish but I got suckered anyway.

I rip out a section of a refill pad everyday and put it into a paper folder, place it in my shoulder bag and place a pen in my pocket. Cup of coffee and I’m absolutely sorted!

Wow one hell of a response – seems we all have largely the same methods. I also memorise good lines or story ideas, when they are really good they stick.

I keep things in my head, but occasionally write things down in my notebook while at university. As Stephen King says “A writer’s notebook is the best way to immortalize bad ideas.”

I use my phone and a striped notebook. But I can write on anything, including myself. 🙂

I use a small notebook and bigger binders to keep all of our stories and novel chapters together. I also make tons on notes on my computer, and then write down the exact same notes just in case the computer loses everything! I always copy and save everything twice! 🙂

I always find that I take the best notes mentally. I just keep them in my head. I know it probably doesn’t work for most writers, but I never want to put thoughts into words until they are formed perfectly. I have a literary blog, so I’m always interested in the writing processes of other writers. Great post!

I sometimes use my phone but often find that the scrap of paper and pen is still the best method, especially when I think of something whilst I’m trying to sleep…
