How Much Are Image Rights?

...I WILL BE including some pictures in my impending book release, but I’m struggling to figure out what people charge for exclusive rights. I’ve searched forums and searched numerous times through Google, but there doesn’t appear to be a general guideline anywhere.

I doubt this calculation actually works ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

1 Picture= 1000 words

0.06c per word (recommended minimum for fiction writers)

1000×0.06= $60!

Clearly the owner of a photograph can charge whatever they want. But I’m trying to figure out what a reasonable cost would be. I need one for the cover and some inserts.

Anyone else going/ gone through the same issue?

  1. There is also Creative Commons via their site which will put you through to other services like Flickr and Google Images. Although, it seems like you have a good idea of where to search. Perhaps, the next step will be to contact the original content owners and submit a proposal to them.

Feel free to peruse my portfolio before to redo my site:

Not sure what you’re looking for specifically.

  2. Not sure if it’s the same situation but I have managed to get permission to include pictures in two of my (non-fiction) books at no cost. The only condition was that I acknowledge properly and provide a free copy of the book. Just ask.

    1. Yeah that’s not a bad way of doing it. I have to track down the image owners first!

  3. royalty free photos at are very affordable (a few dollars apiece) and license for use on book covers for up to 500,000 copies. I checked with them specifically on that last point. Here are some covers I made using some of their stuff:

  4. Check out and for free public domain photos. Pixabay actually has some really great, professional quality pics. Of course, I have no idea what kind of picture you’re looking for, but I use these quite a lot. I even wrote a blog post about it:

    1. Yeah I use them sometimes. Cheers for the linkage though.
I’m after very particular pictures that aren’t readily available and almost certainly won’t be available from from Getty or any of those types of photo stocks.
I think it’s going to require some detective work, tracking down people who took the pictures originally. Another challenge ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Maybe you can check the stock photos alot of them are are like one dollar each or some are free too just try googling! It will help
