SIX WORD stories can seem tougher to knock out than a chapter, article or short story. Trying to convey a scene, or scenes is where the real fun lies, trying to make each word like an Eskimo/ Inuit mid-winter (I almost opted for the onion simile) – layer upon layers – so it has branches of meaning beyond the one you see. Conjunctions like and or the are fairly empty but the others have to go somewhere – really stretch out – similar to wetting a roller with a dab of paint and somehow making it cover a whole wall. Sometimes I succeed, other times I fall short. Sometimes the face of a six worder is all there is, but it should never be a statement. Either way, enjoy the latest:
*Memories Bought!* My childhood sold: cheap.
Executioner retired. Axe/ mind: heavier…heavier.
Grandma forced door. Free at last.
Aryan Tanning Salon. Another terrible idea.
Bus late. Interview missed. Met her.
Remembering her face. Again…and again…
*CLOSED* Clones switched off – by clones.

If they come across like poems generally I’ve not done my job…although occasionally I’ll do some with a more poetic vibe.

Well, poems are condensed stories (unless they’re epic). Your stories are even more condensed and less lyrical, so they don’t fall in the same category. They just reminded me of poems because I’ve never seen anything shorter than a poem. 🙂

Some people do six words and it’s not a story more a poetry line which is what i try and avoid, but do fall into the trap sometimes. If there’s nothing extra to be extrapolated from the words then it’s generally not a story.

I so much like your thoughts around them… one thing I’ve found writing short, is that you have to compress the meaning so much that you have to refer to something really well known.

That’s very true, a common theme, a pop culture reference can infer so much, they’re like bonus words.
